Friends in the Arts: Exhibition of Chinese Collectors’ New Contemporaries
TANK Shanghai is pleased to announce the launch of the large-scale exhibition "Friends in the Arts” which will focus on currently active Chinese collectors of contemporary art, featuring their rich and diverse outlooks in their collection, as well as their spontaneous and conscious artistic visions.
In 2018, TANK Shanghai organized the exhibition “Art Patrons,” an exhibition of Chinese contemporary collectors, at Qiao Space, and invited 36 exemplary Chinese collectors and featured their contributions to Chinese contemporary art by sorting out their collections. The emergence of art patrons as a cultural group in China had not received close attention back then, and this exhibition took the lead in launching and linking various dimensions of this subject, creating a platform for dialogues and exchanges. The background for the organization of the exhibition “Art Patrons” was set in the “global view” in the post-2008 Olympic era and the cultural vision that it advocated. Six years later, however, it is with the aim of reflecting how the new generation of Chinese collectors carry out more independent and profound actions and practices for art itself under the great changes of the era.
"Friends in the Arts” will be curated by Shanghai-based writer and curator Evonne Jiawei Yuan. She graduated from Fudan University with B.A. in Museology, The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London with M.A. in History of Art, and the Architectural Association School of Architecture with M.A. in History & Critical Thinking.
"Friends in the Arts” will be presented at TANK Shanghai in July 2023 to gather the new generation of Chinese collectors from all over the world to build, collectively, a broader and more connected art world.
